Real estate agents make their money on commissions from selling properties. Many people, before starting their real estate careers, think that if they can sell a few properties quickly and easily, they will make money for very little work at all. Real estate agents will tell you that if you think that selling property is fast and easy, you’re in the wrong profession. Here are some tips to get you started on a successful real estate career.
- Commit. Real estate agents are successful because they put forth the time and effort required to build a large network and establish the personal relationships needed to be successful. This takes time and commitment. Many “try out” real estate, thinking they can do it part time, and fail.
- Start from a strong position. Start from a position of strength. If you’re relying on your first commission to pay your bills two weeks after you start your real estate career, you’re putting yourself in a risky situation. Save enough operating costs to keep yourself afloat for at least six months before you enter the real estate market as an agent. It’s not uncommon for real estate agents to wait six months for their first commission to come through.
- Never stop networking. You could always use help finding clients and learning about the properties in your area. Remain active in your local professional real estate community and keep your network strong.
